Bangladesh national team got off to a perky start in a six- goal thriller in the Bangabandhu Gold Cup International Football Tournament defeating Sri Lanka by 4-2 yesterday at the Shamsul Huda Stadium in Jessore. Bangladesh booters looked to be a better outfit and display a positive game after a great disaster in the SAFF Football in Kerala recently. Bangladesh right from the first whistle were trying to take the command of the match and also put the opponents under tremendous pressure.
Bangladesh kept the tempo and again came closer to score when Jamal Bhuiyan pitched the ball on an open space where Jahid was left fully unmarked but his right foot attempt flew over the bar on 11th minute. Jamal Bhuiyan released a through pass for Jahid in the 17th minute, who entered into the area edging past two defenders and crossed it perfectly for Shakhawat Rony, The latter kept his cool to send the ball unto net (1-0).
But the lead did not last long, as two minutes later Sri Lanka equalled the margin with Edison Pigorado converting a penalty when Nasiruddin tackled Sri Lankan forward Madhu Chand De Silva inside the box (1-1).
Bangladesh made a strong reply just after three minutes and this time defender Yasin Khan headed home a Mamunul corner on 22nd minute (2-1).
Bangladesh enlarged the margin on 43rd minute with Nabib Newaz Jibon scored his second international goal with brilliant touch after a Jahid free kick came to his way deflecting the Sri Lankan wall (3-1).
Bangladesh despite started the second half with a clear 3-1 lead could not carry on the momentum, as this time they looked a bit in slow and Sri Lanka took the advantage to reduce margin while Chaturaranga Sanjiba took the advantage of a defense lapse to beat Bangladesh keeper Sohel (3-2).
Bangladesh got the fourth goal on 86h minute and this was from a blunder of a Sri Lankan defender who took a back header for goalkeeper on a Mamunul cross but the keeper Aruna Siri advanced leaving the post open and Shakhawat Rony made no mistake to volley it into the net (4-2).
Earlier, the players of both teams were introduced to chief guest Salman F Rahman, private sector affairs advisor to Awami League President Sheikh Hasina. AK Azad, managing director of Ha-meem Group, and Enayetur rahman Bappi, chairman of Channel 9, were also present during the introduction ceremony.
