A total of 200 voluntary blood donors were honoured by Quantum Foundation yesterday with crests, medals and certificates, reports BSS. The contributors, who donated blood at least 10 or 25 times, were honoured at the function at National Press Club where eminent economist and distinguished fellow at the Centre for Policy Dialogue (CPD) Dr Debapriya Bhattacharya was present as the chief guest. Chief Coordinator of Quantum Foundation Madam Nahar Al Bokhari chaired the function, while honourary director of Quantum Foundation and ABM Yunus delivered the welcome address. On behalf of the blood donors, Dr Sabrina Yasmin, and on behalf of persons taking blood, thalassemia patient Asfia spoke. Putting emphasis on expanding such a noble social movement, the economist Dr Debapriya expressed the hope that it (movement) could meet 50 percent demand of blood in the next 20 years. The function was informed that there is an annual demand of nearly six lakh bags of blood in the country. To meet this demand, Quantum Foundation has been conducting voluntary blood donation campaign since 1996 to raise mass awareness about the important issue. The organization has been able to play a crucial role in saving the life of 7.50 lakh people through its two-decade strides, it said.
