The country-wide dawn-to-dusk hartal called by Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami in protest of the Supreme Court upholding death penalty handed down to party chief Motiur Rahman Nizami for wartime offences, ended without any untoward incident. Vehicular movement was normal in the streets of the capital and elsewhere in the country. Law enforcers were posted at strategic points of the capital to fend off untoward incidents.
On the other hand, anti-hartal processions were brought out in different parts of the country including the capital.
The ruling Awami League (AL) and its front organisations brought out anti-hartal processions at AL party offices at Bangabandhu Avenue, Press Club and Dhanmondi. Similarly, Gonojagoran Mancha too brought out anti-hartal processions from Shahbagh and along different streets of Dhaka University Campus.
In Chandpur district, miscreants hurled petrol and crude bombs on a moving inter-city express train Meghna at Unkila area of Shahrasti upazila on Wednesday night. The Chittagong-bound train was carrying about 400 passengers. The incident created panic among passengers as the engine room caught fire however the loco master and his colleagues immediately doused the flames.
On getting information, Officer-in-charge of Shahrasti police station, Md Mizan, along with police, visited the spot. A general diary (GD) was filed in this connection however, no one was arrested.
In Khulna city, the hartal passed off peacefully without any untoward incident reported.
There was no picketing anywhere and rickshaws, easy-bikes, private cars, buses and trucks plied on the streets under eight thanas of Khulan Metropolitan City.
