The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP)-nominated Khorshed Alam Joy ("paddy" symbol) has been re-elected mayor of Singair Municipality in Manikganj district. The election was held peacefully yesterday (Thursday), barring one or two incidents.
He defeated the rebel Awami League candidate contesting as independent, former mayor Mir Mohammed Shajahan ("jug" symbol), by a small margin of around 2,500 votes. Alam got 6,876 votes and Shajahan 4,828. The Awami League nominated Abu Nayem Mohammed Basher ("boat" symbol) got 3,377 votes.
A total of six candidates were in the fray for the mayor's post, 34 are in the race to become councillors and seven female councillors, Election Commission sources said. The election was scheduled to be held on December 30, 2015, but it was postponed by the High Court following a writ petition concerning correction of voter list and demarcation of the boundary of the municipality.
The three other candidates for the mayor's post were Ashraf Ali of the Khelafat Majlish ("wall clock" symbol), Md. Tofazzol Hossain ("coconut tree") and Md Hafiz Uddin ("cellphone").
Following the death of Md Jamal Uddin, a councillor candidate of ward No. 1, the returning officer postponed the election for that ward, said Md Munir Hossain, district election officer and returning officer.
At around 9:30am, two youths were held for allegedly casting false votes at the Singair Pilot Girls' High School centre. They were identified as Sujon and Al-Amin. Judicial magistrate Azadur Rahman Sheikh of a mobile court caught them from the centre, said Munir Hossain.
Locals said supporters of the Awami League’s mayor candidate stormed the Golora Primary School centre and started stamping ballot papers. They were chased out by security personnel and polling officials, but no one was detained, the sitting mayor, Khorshed Alam Joy, told reporters at the centre.
