Dhaka University Teachers’ Association (DUTA) observed a two-hour work abstention as well as a sit-in programme on the campus from 11am to 1pm yesterday over discrepancies in the 8th pay scale.
At the programme, the teachers urged Finance Minister AMA Muhith to fulfill his promises given to them (DUTA members) for the revision of the pay scale.
The DUTA leaders also warned the government of tougher movement unless their demands are met within January 11.
Addressing the programme, DUTA Secretary Prof ASM Maksud Kamal said teachers at 37 universities across the country were observing the abstention  programme.
“We have been observing different peaceful programmes without hampering the study of the students for the last nine months” he said.
He also said that the teachers will have no option but to go for continuous work abstention from 11 January if their demands are not met.

Criticising the finance minister, Kamal said he (Muhith) has been delivering confusing statements over the pay scale.
The teachers have been alleging that the new pay scale ensures more facilities for the secretaries and less for others.
The salary of the teachers in the new pay scale remains two steps below than that of the secretaries, which is not only discriminatory but also disgraceful to them, claim the teachers.
Our Staff Reproetr from Barisal adds that the teachers of Barisal University also observed a two-hour work absences on the campus rejecting the 8th pay scale demanding immediate reinstatement of selection grade and time scale facilities.
Speakers at the program threaten to wage a tougher movement including a strike if the government fails to fulfill their demand within January 10th.
The 8th pay scale insult the status of about 15,000 teachers of 37 public universities across the country, the speakers claimed at the programme.
The government, on September 7, 2015, approved the 8th pay scale for government employees with retrospective effect from July 1, 2014.
