State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Nasrul Hamid yesterday said that affordability is the 'key' to ensuring rapid usage of renewable energy in the country.
He was speaking as the chief guest at the 4th international conference on the Developments in Renewable Energy Technology (ICDRET-2016) was organised by the United International University (UIU) at the university campus from January 7-9.
"People have a perception that renewable energy is expensive and they can't afford it. A lot of people ask me why we need solar in country because it's an expensive thing. It shows that we are not aware of what lies ahead."
The truth is, he said, urban people here are not concern about the sources of electricity because they are getting electricity and they can afford it.
"Go to the village and you will see that a solar revolution has been going on there. This is because, they need it there
and solar power has been made affordable there through several initiatives"
Bangladesh has become the number one country in using solar home system (SHS). "We have over four million SHS in Bangladesh. That is a revolution ".
Hamid said that people will be encouraged to use solar energy if there is an incentive for 'going green'.
"Oil price has been deteriorating across the world and I have heard that it will deteriorate further. So many might feel daunted in using renewable energy. That's why we have to provide incentives to encourage people here to use renewable energy".
Hamid proposed for a certification of 'green building' to encourage and promote renewable energy.
He also said that human resource is a big challenge ahead of us. "The energy and power sector in Bangladesh will see nearly $15 billion in the next five years. We need professional people."
