Prices of eggs soared in different kitchen markets of the district during the last two week. Four eggs are now selling at Tk 36 against Tk 28 to Tk 30.
Ripon Mia, an egg trader at Bottola bazaar in Narsingdi town, has attributed the price hike to short supply of poultry products in the markets.
The short supply has been caused by higher demand from consumers at Tongi, where tens of thousands of people have gathered for the Biwsha Ijtema.
Price rise of poultry feed, medicines and the fall in supply are the other reasons.
The wholesale price for every 100 eggs is now at Tk 900; but two weeks ago it was Tk 700, said Abdus Salam, a poultry farm owner of Chaitonya village in Shibpur upazila.
Wholessaler Tarikul Islam of Bhelanagar said production of eggs fell by about 50 percent in the recent weeks
