Diarrhoea and pneumonia diseases have broken out in Bogra, an area battered by cold wave.
More than 200 people, including 50 children, have been admitted to Bogra Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital over the last three days following an outbreak of diarrhoea and pneumonia in the city and its suburbs.
Hospital sources said there is no report of any death from the diseases that have broken out in 12 upazilas of the district. Patients are also being treated in different private clinics.
The cold spell sweeping the northern districts has been blamed for the spread of viral diseases, Bogra Mohammad Ali Hospital sources said.
Sources at Bogra Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital and Bogra Mohammad Ali hospital said there has been a heavy rush of diarrhoea patients.
Consumption of unhygienic food coupled with cold might have caused the diarrhoeal disease, they said.
Supply water might have been contaminated, a source at the Bogra municipal office said, adding that the Public Health Engineering Department found micro-organisms in the supply water last week.
The stock of saline, which is used to treat diarrhoea and cholera patients, has been exhausted, and the patients are being forced to buy their own medicine from outside.
Senior consultant and child specialist Dr Shafiqul said if the children are found breathing in difficulty, they should be taken to the doctors immediately.
Civil Surgeon of Bogra Dr. Ardhendu Dev said the diseases are not alarming and there is nothing to panic. They are adequate treatment facilities at hospitals, he said.
