The dawn-to dusk general strike, called by Jamaat-e-Islami, protesting the Supreme Court (SC) verdict that upheld the death penalty of war criminal Jamaat Ameer Matiur Rahman Nizami, passed off peacefully yesterday in Khulna, Sylhet and Barisal yesterday without any untoward incidents. There were no picketing anywhere in the city during hartal period.
Rickshaw pullers, easy-bikes, baby-taxies, private cars, busses and trucks drivers plied their vehicles in all roads in the cities.
All shops and kitchen markets and academic institutions were found open. Financial transactions in all state-owned and private banks continued amid tight security. Hartal call did not affect attendance in any office in the city and cargo handling operations at ports also.
The production of mills and factories in industrial belts was not hampered due to dawn to dusk general strike, sources said. All residential hotels, private hostels and residential halls of the two universities of the cities have been brought under strict surveillance by men of intelligence agencies and plain cloth policemen.
Meanwhile, Awami League (AL) led 14-party grand alliance and its front organisations brought out an anti-hartal procession from party offices chanting slogans against BNP-Jamaat alliance.
