Leaders of the Federation of Bangladesh University Teachers’ Association (FBUTA) yesterday denounced the finance ministry’s press release issued on January 4, saying this is part of a conspiracy against public university teachers.
They alleged that the press release, signed by Md Jalal Uddin, joint secretary, ministry of finance, gave a confusing explanation about teachers’ status, nature of job, age limit of service, etc.
“The recommendations of the sub-committee to remove salary discrimination have not been reflected in the new pay scale. Besides, an additional secretary sent a circular to the education ministry, bypassing the sub-committee's recommendations. It clearly proves that some bureaucrats are engaged in a conspiracy against the just demands of the teachers,” the FBUTA said in a press release yesterday.
The association demanded an impartial probe into the circular to bring the perpetrators to justice so that no one dares to change the decisions of the highest policymakers in future.
Lashing out at the finance ministry’s press release, the association said: “The press release said a public university teacher gets Grade-3 after 12 years. But the fact is there is no promotion system at the university level. A teacher can apply for the post of professor if he completes 25 five years of service. Also, he must work for at least 14 years as assistant professor and he must have 15 research papers published in recognised journals. He must also have seven research papers during assistant professorship.”
