Some 92 male resident students of Jhenidah Government Keshab Chandra College have been staying at private boarding houses in the town after the authorities closed down their dormitory four years ago.
The four-storey Shaheed Ziaur Rahman dormitory was renamed as Bir Shreshtha Hamidur Rahman Hall by the Awami League-led government that later shut it down for reason not known. Constructed on the land of the college near Chuadanga Bus Stand in the town by the then BNP-led four-party alliance government has now become a den of criminals.
As there is no maintenance, a section of unscrupulous people have been stealing doors, windows, furnishers and fans of the abandoned hostel.
Alamgir Hossain, a third year student of the college, said he was impressed when he became a resident student of the dormitory. But the student is now quite frustrated following the closure of the hostel for reason not known to him.
Abdus Salam, general secretary of Jatiayatabadi Chhatra Dal of the college unit, said the poor and meritorious students of the government college have been deprived of education facilities because of the closure of the dormitory.
Abu Sumon Biswas, general secretary of Chhatra League of the college unit, said they have urged the college administration to reopen the college hostel. It might reopen the hall soon, he said.
When contacted, the principal of the college BM Rezaul Karim said they have been thinking of reopening the college hostel for the sake of insolvent and meritorious students.
