Home minister vows to defy Jamaat strike

STAFF REPORTER

Home minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal yesterday emphatically said that the days of hartal are over.
His remark came after the Jamaat-e-Islami called a nationwide dawn-to-dusk hartal today (Thursday) in protest against the Supreme Court’s (SC's) verdict on Jamaat ameer Jamaat-e-Islami Matiur Rahman Nizami. The apex court yesterday upheld the death penalty of Nizami, who was involved in the murder of intellectuals during the 1971 Liberation War.
“We assure people that it will be a 'paper-only' hartal. So, there will not be any subversive act ,” the minister said.
“All kinds of vehicles will run tomorrow and we'll provide necessary security to them. There is nothing to fear,” he said while addressing the inaugural programme of the transport company ‘Ekattor Paribahan’ in the city's Mirpur area yesterday.
Kamal said conspirators are still active at both home and abroad to destabilise the country. “But they will not succeed as our law enforcement and intelligence agencies are alert to thwart their plots,” he claimed.
The minister asked transport owners and workers to ply their vehicles during the hartal hours without any fear. “Don’t worry. The law enforcement agencies will provide security,” he said.
Earlier, at a view-exchange meeting with Alem-Ulama at ward-2 community centre of the city’s Pallabi area, Kamal had urged people to hand over those who would create any obstacle to vehicular movement or carry out any arson attack.
