The authorities of National Board of Revenue (NBR) have sought information on bank accounts of Debapriya Bhattacharya, a macro-economist and Distinguished Fellow of Centre for Policy Dialogue (CPD), and his wife Irina Bhattacharya for a period of eight years.
The NBR, on January 4, issued letters to all banks operating in Bangladesh asking for the information. Debapriya and his wife, however, received letters in this regard yesterday.
It may be mentioned that, at a seminar on January 3, the CPD estimated that the government would experience a shortfall of Tk 40,000 crore in revenue collection in 2015-16 fiscal. The day after, the NBR issued its letters seeking information on bank accounts of Debapriya and his wife.Contacted, Debapriya yesterday said that as per the existing law, the NBR could summon such information on anyone’s bank account.
“Summoning such information is nothing new. I was harassed in 2003 when the NBR had issued a similar letter and summoned information on my bank accounts for a period of six years,” said the economist.
