SYLHET: A tribunal here yesterday stayed the trial proceedings of the murder case filed in connection with killing of ex-Finance Minister SAMS Kibria, reports UNB.
Sylhet Speedy Trial Tribunal Judge Makbul Ahsan passed the order following a petition filed by the state. Public prosecutor Kishore Kumar Kar said the Kibria murder case had been transferred to the Sylhet Speedy Trial Tribunal from Habiganj District and Session Judge Court for its quick disposal.
However, the tribunal could not dispose of the case even the time was extended twice by 15 days each after the stipulated 90 days.
He also said the a petition was filed with the tribunal seeking a stay on the case proceedings as a letter has been sent to the Law Ministry seeking to continue the trial proceedings of the case in the Sylhet Speedy Trial Tribunal.
Five people, including Kibria, were killed and 70 others injured in a grenade attack on a public rally of local Awami League at Baidder Bazar in Sadar upazila on January 27, 2005. Awami League leader Abdul Mazid Khan filed two cases -- one for murder and another under the Explosive Substances Act -- with the Habiganj Police Station the following day.
