Project okayed to boost freshwater supply in Ctg

The government has taken an initiative to enhance the water supply capacity of Chittagong Wasa by 60 million litres a day and thus meet the growing demand of freshwater in the port city to a large extent, reports UNB.
The Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (Ecnec) approved a project to this end titled 'Bhandal Juri Water Supply Project' involving Tk 1036.30 crore at its 17th meeting in the current fiscal year on Tuesday.
Of the total project cost, Tk 261.64 crore will come from the national exchequer, Tk 754.66 crore as project assistance from the Economic Development of Cooperation Fund, Korea (KEDCF), while Tk 20 crore from the organisation's own fund.
Chittagong Wasa under the Local Government Division will implement the project by September 2020 in three upazilas -- Boalmari, Patiya and Anwara -of the district.
Talking to UNB, a Planning Commission official said the freshwater demand in Chittagong, as being the country's second largest city and the commercial capital, is growing every day. Besides, two government EPZs and one private EPZ have already been set up in Chittagong while freshwater is also being supplied to the international sea going ships at the Chittagong Port alongside the growing number of industries and population at the port city.
The official said Chittagong Wasa could now meet only 42 per cent of freshwater demand at the port city and the project has been approved considering the overall situation.
He said that once the project is implemented it would enhance the water supply capacity of Chittagong Wasa by 60 million litres of water a day and thus contribute to the development of the livelihood of people living along the left coast of the Karnaphuli River and development of various industries.
About the project, Planning Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal said the project has been approved by Ecnec considering the growing demand for fresh water in the port city.
Once the project is implemented, he said, Chittagong Wasa will be able to supply more 60 million litres of water a day thus raising the water supply coverage of Chittagong Wasa to 72 per cent.
Apart from supplying 60 million litres of freshwater a day through pipeline along the Karnaphuli River, the project also aims to have an interconnection between the two coasts of the Karnaphuli, making Chittagong more suitable for setting up newer industries, said another official at the Planning Commission.
The main project activities include 50 acres land acquisition and development, setting up a water treatment plant with the capacity of supplying 60 million litres of water a day, setting up some 133.3 kilometers of water transmission and distribution line, constructing two water reservoirs having the capacity of 8000 square metres and 2500 square metres, and constructing 30 staff quarters.
