Upholding Nizami’s 
death sentence lauded

CHITTAGONG: Activists of different political parties and cultural organisations in Chittagong and Rangpur cities yesterday brought out jubilant processions over upholding the death sentence awarded by an Appellate Division bench to incumbent chief of Jamaate Islami Matiur Rahman Nizami for his crimes against humanity during the War of Liberation in 1971, reports  BSS.
Soon after a 4-member Appellate Division bench of the Supreme Court headed by Chief Justice SK Sinha delivered the summary verdict, hundreds of people brought out processions from different parts of the city and flocked to the central Shahid Minar premises. The Supreme Court on Wednesday morning upheld the death sentence of war criminal Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Matiur Rahman Nizami on charge of killing intellectuals, mass killing and rape.
Welcoming the verdict, Ganajagaran Mancha in Chittagong also brought out procession from the CPC premises which ended at Chittagong Central Shaheed Minar after parading through different city streets. Paying tributes to the martyrs of the Liberation War, the Ganajagaran activists placed wreaths at the Shaheed Minar and held a meeting there.  Bangladesh Awami League (AL) and Bangladesh Chhatra league also brought out processions in the city welcoming the verdict of the Appellate Division.
The leaders and activists of the party gathered at Darul Fazal Market party office and held a rally at Chittagong press club.
Addressing the rally Chittagong City AL president and former city mayor ABM Mohiuddin Chowdhury thanked the government as well as the Appellate Division bench of the Supreme Court for fulfilling the nation's expectation by upholding the death sentence to top war criminal Matiur Rahman Nizami.
Another report adds from Rangpur: People from all walks of life and leaders of different organisations have expressed satisfaction over the verdict upholding death sentence against Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Matiur Rahman Nizami. While expressing instant reactions, the people of Rangpur region highly lauded verdict of the Appellate Division and demanded for its immediate execution in building a war criminal free Bangladesh.
Rangpur City Mayor and freedom fighter Alhaj Sarfuddin Ahmed Jhantu termed the verdict upholding capital punishment of Nizami as very important as it has reflected hopes and aspirations of the common people.
Expressing satisfaction over the verdict, Vice-chancellor of Begum Rokeya University Professor Dr AKM Nurun Nabi said justice has been established and the nation would become free from the decades-old stigma as soon as the verdict was executed.
Welcoming and congratulating the learned Appellate Division of the Supreme Court, ICT-1 and the prosecution, Professor Nabi said the final verdict has ultimately fulfilled expectation of the whole nation.
