A defamation case has been filed against BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia and BNP standing committee member Gayeshwar Chandra Roy for making derogatory remarks against the martyrs, who laid down their lives during the 1971 Liberation War, reports UNB. AB Siddique, president of pro-Awami League organisation Bangladesh Jono Netri Parishad, filed the case with Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Court yesterday.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Aminul Haq asked the officer-in-charge of Shahbagh Police Station to submit a report in this regard within February 7 after investigation and recording the statement of the plaintiff in the case.
According to the case statement, the BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia on December 21 raised questions about the number of Liberation War martyrs while addressing a discussion at Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh. “There are controversies over how many were martyred in the Liberation War. There are also many books and documents on the controversies,” said Khaleda.
Meanwhile, BNP standing committee member Gayeshwar Chandra Roy in a programme at Jatiya Press Club, said “The martyred intellectuals died like fools during the Liberation War and the fools like us placed wreaths on their graveyard and if we failed to place wreaths then it will count as a crime.”
