State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources, Nasrul Hamid, yesterday inaugurated drilling work of three wells in Joypurhat under the “Feasibility Study for the Extraction of Coal Bed Methane (CBM) at Jamalganj Coal Field” project. Speaking on the occasion, the State Minister said that the government has been relentlessly searching for alternative sources of energy as natural gas reserves are waning. He said that ensuring availability of alternative energy sources has become imperative, and the government has been taking effective measures to figure out energy sources like Liquified Natural Gas (LNG), Liquified Petroleum Gas (LPG) and coal.
“All sorts of possibilities will be explored to keep the momentum of development that Bangladesh is currently enjoying,” he said and added that the country has been progressing in sync with Vision 2021 and Vision 2041.
About extraction of CBM, Nasrul said that the availability of methane gas depends on the depth of the coal mine. There are good prospects of finding CBM in Jamalganj coal field, which will be a blessing for the area as it will accelerate development there. Under this project, the presence and amount of CBM in the coal field will be measured. The estimated cost of the project is Tk. 2,337.86 lakh.
