Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) announced a 14-member squad for the upcoming T20 series against Zimbabwe, including two new faces—Abu Haider Rony and Nurul Hasan Sohan.
Given the performance of the both players in the recently concluded BPL-3, both of them are expected to make the cut. Shuvagata Hom who is yet to make T20 debut, also was drafted into the side from which Nasir Hossain and Liton Das were axed.
Both of them however could get a shot in the series since the squad was announced for the first two matches.
Haider claimed 22 wickets in the BPL-3 and was the second highest wicket-taker, second only to Kevon Kooper’s 23. He was one of the finds of the tournament. His lethal yorker and ability to bowl well in the death overs made him favourite to get a place in the squad. Sohan also proved his power-hitting prowess in the tournament.
Meanwhile, Khulna will host the upcoming T20 series between Bangladesh and touring Zimbabwe instead of Sylhet as Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) came up with the explanation that the Sylhet venue should be handed to ICC for the Under-19 World Cup.
ICC however wants the Sylhet International Cricket Stadium, which will host three matches of the forthcoming ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup 2016 along with the venues of Dhaka, Chittagong and Cox’s Barzar to be handed within January 20.
The BCB however couldn’t complete the four-match series within January 20, which is why they picked up Khulna Sheikh Abu Naser Stadium as the venue of the series.
BCB director Sheikh Sohel, also the chairman of disciplinary committee, yesterday confirmed the matter and said that all the matches of the Zimbabwe series will be held in Khulna
“All the matches of the Zimbabwe series will be held in Khulna. We are initially thinking to arrange the matches in Khulna and Sylhet but now the idea has been cancelled,” Sheikh Sohel said.
“The distance between Sylhet and Khulna is more. There will be too many difficulties to carry the media broadcasting equipments. Even ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup will be held in Sylhet. For these reasons, we’ve finally decided to keep the series in Khulna. And the decision is final now.”
Zimbabwe will arrive in Bangladesh on January 11 to play four-match T20 series which is considered as part of the preparation for Asia Cup and World T20. Zimbabwe will travel to Khulna on January 12. The matches will be held on January 15, 17, 20 and 22.
