Thousands of protesters organised demonstrations under various banners and held a rally in Jhenaidah town at noon yesterday, demanding exemplary punishment for one Iqbal, the killer of three of his nephews—all children. The irate protesters also besieged Shailkupa Police Station in the afternoon, demanding punishment and immediate trial of the murderer and his accomplices. Most of the protesters were school and college students. Three children—Siplu, 10, his younger brother, Amin, 8, and their aunt’s son, Mahim—were burnt alive when their eldest uncle, Iqbal, sprayed a petroleum-like substance on the room which the children were in and burnt them alive. Shahjahan Seraj, investigating officer of the case, said locals handed over the killer from the house as he was trying to flee. Siplu and his younger brother Amin died on the spot around 7pm, while Mahim succumbed to his injuries when he was referred to Faridpur Medical College Hospital from Jhenaidah Sadar Hospital around 8.30pm.
Iqbal, son of Golam Nabi Mia of Kabirpur village in Shailkupa municipality, has confessed to the gruesome murders. He has also described in graphic detail how he had killed the children on Sunday evening. In his confessional statement to the police, the culprit confessed that he developed a conflict with his father, Golam Nabi, a fertiliser dealer, when his father failed to repay the money Iqbal had deposited with him. On Sunday afternoon, there was a vehement dispute between Iqbal and his father.
Later that afternoon, Iqbal brought his younger brother Delwar Hossain Dulu’s two sons, Siplu and Amin, and his sister Jesmin Akter’s son, Mahim, to his room with false inducements, promising to play video games with them on his laptop. He tied the three children’s eyes, mouths and hands, and beat them on their heads with hammers. Following copious bleeding, Iqbal opened the connection of a gas cylinder and torched them. When the three were almost burnt, Iqbal left the room and tried to flee. The police said locals had captured Iqbal and handed him over to police immediately after the incident. The children were buried at the village graves at Manaharpur village in the same upazila after a janaja prayer at Kabirpur mosque after Johr prayer. The police would take necessary legal steps in this connection after receiving the post-mortem report from the department concerned, said Gopinath Kanjilal, the assistant superintendent of police in Jhenaidah.
