At least eight people, including newly elected president of district Transport Workers Association, have been sued for attacking and seriously injuring a transport leader on Sunday night. Habibur Rahman Habib, 32, joint-secretary of Mymensingh district Transport Owners Association, was stabbed allegedly by rival workers at Patgodam Bus Stand in the town on Sunday night. Habib has been admitted to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital with severe injuries, police said. Habib’s father Suruj Miah, also an ex-president of the workers association, lodged a case with Kotwali police station yesterday morning accusing eight people, said Md Kamrul Islam, officer-in-charge of Kotwali police station.
The accused persons include Nazrul Islam, 45are-Mohammad Ali, 35, and Jane Alam, 33, both associates of Nazrul, police said. Police arrested Jane Alam from town’s Krishtapur area early yesterday. He was being interrogated at the police station. Earlier, Suruj Miah blamed Nazrul and his men for the attack and demanded immediate arrest of the culprits. Quoting association sources, police said, there had been a feud over the election of District Transport Workers Association, held on December 25. The newly elected president of the workers association, Md Nazrul Islam, and his supporters had a feud with Habib, who had campaigned for the defeated candidate, Abdus Salam, sources said. When contacted, Nazrul said he and his men were not involved with the attack.
