Bangladesh Under-19 team plans to catch the opponents in spin-web at their home den in the upcoming ICC U19 Cricket World Cup
Citing the spin as their main strength, the team’s coach Mizanur Rahman Babul said they decided to play to their strength as they set their sight on doing well in this tournament. “We’ll play to our strength. In this condition, you know spinners could be handy,” he told the reporters yesterday on the team’s first day’s practice session at National Cricket Academy Ground in Mirpur.
Bangladesh Under-19 team has the history of not doing well in multinational tournament. Even they could never seal the semi-final spot in the youth World Cup but this time they are brimming with confidence, following their near perfect record in the bilateral series.
“It’s true that we could not fare well in the last tri-nation series in India. There are some reasons behind it. We haven’t done enough practice actually,” he said.
“But we will go into the tournament with enough practice matches this time. As part of our preparation for the upcoming World Cup, We’ll play three-match youth ODI series against West Indies that will be held on January 11, 14 and 15 respectively. We’re focusing more on this series now,” he added.
West Indies Under-19 team is due to arrive in Bangladesh on January 8.
“If we look at the previous day’s result we’ll get to see we played against South Africa in home and away series and beat them convincingly. They have been drawn in the same group with us. We did well against Sri Lanka. Overall, the mental condition of boys has been quite well,” he pointed out.
“We’ll play at our home condition. Spin is our main strength. So, we’re mulling to be champion in group stage.”
Recalling the past tournaments, Babul said that they usually succumbed to pressure in the must-win game after playing well thoroughly.
“Since 2012, I’ve been with U-19 team. If we take that World Cup (which was held in Australia) in consideration we lost one match to go into the main stage of the meet. Last World Cup (in UAE), we derailed from the competition losing to Australia by run-rate. We couldn’t handle the pressure well, and so, we missed to go through the cup phase.”
On the other hand, skipper Mehedi Hasan Miraj echoed the same sentiment and said that they are working on small errors that cost them heavily.
“When we play a series we do fare well. But when we enter in World Cup we derail from the competition due to small errors. Last World Cup, we lost on the basis of run-rate though we were confirmed to go into the next round after winning the first two matches but unfortunately we couldn’t deal with the pressure against Australia,” Mehedi Hasan Miraj said.
“We’re working on those areas where we actually needed to improve for doing better. Hopefully it will be okay before the World Cup,” Miraj remarked.
