BSS

Industries Minister Amir Hossain Amu yesterday gave deposition in the August 21, 2004 grenade attack murder case and said the attack was aimed at killing Awami League top leaders including then opposition leader and now Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to make the party bankrupt in leadership, reports BSS. The minister gave the deposition to a Dhaka court as 205 prosecution witness from 10:45am to 12.30pm yesterday. He said that the grenade attack on the AL rally at Bangabandhu Avenue in the capital on August 21 in 2004 was carried out by the banned Islamist outfit Harkatul Jihad Al Islami. “I myself suffered splinter injuries in the grenade attacks,” he said, adding that the target of the attack was killing all the front ranking leaders of the AL.
A total of 24 people including the then Mahila Awami League president and wife of late president Zillur Rahman were killed and over 500 others injured in the attack and many of them became crippled for life.
CID submitted two separate supplementary chargesheets in the August 21 grenade attack cases-one for murder and another under explosive act against 30 people on July 3 this year after a fresh investigation into the matter. Two separate cases, one for murder and another under explosive act were lodged to this end.
A total of 52 persons were indicted in two separate charge sheets including former minister and Jamaat-e-Islami Secretary General Ali Ahsan Mohammad Mojaheed, former BNP state minister for home Lutfozzaman Babar, ex-deputy Minister Abdus Salam Pintu and Harkatul Jihad chief Mufti Abdul Hannan.
