Ctg Port sets cargo handling record

The Chittoagong Port authority (CPA) has set a new record of handling two million containers before one year against the target, after 41 years. “The consultant to CPA had set a target that Chittagong Port should able to handle 19.56 lakh twenty-foot equivalent unit (TEU) container and 42.47 lakh tonnes general cargo, by 2016. But, the CPA has already exceed the target before one year,” shipping minister Shajahan Khan told reporters, at a press briefing yesterday.
A total of 20.25 lakh TEU containers and 51.38 lakh tonnes of general cargo have already been handled by the Chittagong Port, which has created a new record since the port's inception in 1977, the minister said. Chairman of Chittagong Port, Rear Admiral M Nizam Uddin Ahmed, presented a paper on the success of the port. Among others, member of the parliamentary standing committee on shipping ministry, MA Latif, shipping secretary Ashok Madhab Roy, and member (admin) of CPA, Zafar Alam, also spoke at the press conference. “On an average, growth of the CPA was 11 per cent in the last 20 years, while average growth was 13 per cent, between 2012 and 2015. Handling of TEU containers increased by seven lakh, during the same period,” Shajahan Khan said.
Terming the cargo handling feat as a ‘new record in the history’, the minister said, adding, “handling of TEU container capacity has increased to 40,000 TEUs, from 30,000 TEUs. The demand of TEU containers handling would be 10.6 million, by 2043.”
He said Bangladesh has turned into a middle-income country, from a lower income one. “The success of Chittagong Port indicates that the country is moving forward. The country is moving forward due to political stability. We won’t allow anybody to destabilise the country, at any cost. We'll to be careful about that,” Shajahan Khan added. Recalling the War of Liberation, the minister said, “The role of Chittagong Port was very important during the independence period. The Chittagong Port was able to attract the world community's attention due to the rebellion at ‘ MV Swat’, and ‘Operation Jackpot’ on March 24 in 1971.” He appreciated the running of the port using its own resources. The minister handed over a certificate of success to the CPA chairman.
