Cable service worker short at  

A worker of a cable service provider sustained bullet injuries as miscreants shot at him at Pirerbagh in Mirpur of the capital on Saturday night. The victim was Nur M Bijoy, 22, a resident of Bashbari in Bancharampur upazila of Brahmanbaria district. Bijoy used to live at a rented house at Pirerbagh. Witnesses said Bijoy was working at Bombay Goli at Pirerbagh. Some miscreants suddenly rushed there and opened fire at him around 9:30pm, leaving him injured. Later, he was whisked off to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) around 11pm, said Inspector Mozammel Haque, in-charge of DMCH police camp.

Mob beats 6 ‘extortionists’
A mob beat up six suspected criminals as they allegedly attempted to raise toll from some shops forcibly in Baluchar area of Sylhet city on Saturday evening. Among the six, there was a leader of the ruling party’s student wing Bangladesh Chhatra League, sources said. The alleged extortionists were Anny, Kawser, Naim, Samad, Shamim and Anas. Locals said a gang of criminals, numbering nine, led by Anny and Mahmud, went to collect toll from different shops in the area at 5pm. Informed, a group of locals caught them and handed over them to police after giving them a severe thrashing. Nizam Uddin Chowdhury, officer-in-charge of Shahporan police station, confirmed the incident. But the OC denied that they took the accused to the police station. The accused fled the scene before police visited the spot, he said.

One killed, 4 hurt in road crash
A man was killed and four others injured when an auto-rickshaw collided head-on with a human hauler in Kasiadanga area on Rajshahi-Kakonhat road under Rajpara Police Station in Rajshahi city yesterday, police and hospital sources said. The deceased was Siraj Uddowla, 56, of Maroil village under Godagari Upazila of the district. Four injured persons, Muslem Uddin, 42, Bulbul Hossain, 35, Taher Ali, 35, and auto-rickshaw driver Ariful Islam, 45, were admitted to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital. Mahbubur Rahman, officer-in-charge (OC) of Rajpara police station, said a cattle-laden human hauler collided head-on with an auto-rickshaw carrying four passengers around 10.30 am. Two of the injured persons were rushed to the hospital immediately where the attending doctors declared Siraj Uddowla dead after a few minutes of admission. A case was recorded with the police station in this connection, the OC added.
