Stocks began New Year 2016 with mixed trend as there were still some old worries prominent among investors. The major concerns were about fresh fund flow to the market and how the central bank would design its half-yearly monetary policy stance scheduled to be announced later this month, reports BSS.
Stocks closed out an apparently positive, but ultimately unsatisfying 2015, with the market selling off into the close on its final trading day, turning in a mixed trading performance for the year.
The DSEX and CSCX closed 2015 in green, but existing concern chocked the little yearend gain, and the broader share price index at the country's premier bourse - Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) - closed the opening session of 2016 flat in red.
The major market indicator at the Chittagong Stock Exchange (CSE), however, managed to end in green with marginal rise.
On Thursday, expectations for the New Year drove the investors' into the buying spree particularly in food and allied, engineering, banking and services sectors' stocks.
The buying spree faded into the relatively higher profit-booking selling yesterday when the market entered a new year. The DSEX slid to 4624.01 at the close yesterday on Sunday from last year's close at 4629.64.
The two selective indices, however, moved slightly up because of repositioning of some investors in these scrip groups. The blue-chip DS30 ended the day at 1759.51 and the Shariah DSES finished at 1109.28.
The daily trade value was also marginally down at Tk 366.42 crore for 9.60 crore shares from Thursday's Tk 434.39 crore for 9.70 crore shares when most of the issued traded ended lower. Out of the day's 315 issues traded, 112 closed higher, 156 lower and 47 static.
Miracle Industries, Malek Spinning, NHFIL, Beximco and Stylecraft were the day's top gainers when the major losers were Western Marine, Progressive Life, Mercantile Bank, NTC and Shahjalal Bank.
Beximco topped the turnover list followed by Beximco Pharma, Emerald Oil, UPGDCL and KDS Accessories.
CSE closed the New Year's opening session in green, with CSCX closing 12.01 point up at 8584.14. A total of 68.40 lakh shares worth Tk 23.11 crore changed hands on the day when 99 securities closed higher, 102 lower and 25 static among traded 226 issues.
