The expectation to continue the upward spiral is now understandably high on Bangladesh players following their amazing performance in the preceding year. From a team capable of producing occasional flashes of brilliance, they have evolved into consistent performers but that transformation happened in ODI cricket. They had however marked progress in Twenty20 and Test albeit those were nowhere near the amazing record in ODI cricket. Therefore still there is slight tension whether they could translate their ODI form to the T20 cricket with which they would set off their journey in 2016.
In the first four months of this year, Bangladesh would play three T20 series- a bilateral series against Zimbabwe, Asia Cup and World T20.
“We haven’t any scope to look back,” said Mahmudullah Riyad, one of the architects of Bangladesh’s success in 2015.
“There is high expectation on us and it’s our duty to keep it up. We are looking forward to the cricket we have in 2016. We’ve to work hard.”
While Bangladesh’s record in T20 cricket doesn’t make the world sit up, Riyad wasn’t so hopeless to translate their ODI form to the shortest version of the cricket. According to the all-rounder they should continue the fearless brand of cricket which gave them success abundance in ODI cricket in the last year.
“One of the main reasons of doing so good in ODI cricket was to play the fearless brand of cricket and to go with positive intent. This brand of cricket should be continued regardless of the format of the cricket. We have rooms to improvement in T20 cricket but if we stick to our plan, we will be successful.”
One of the senior members of Bangladesh team, Riyad praised the Bangladesh Cricket Board’s decision to organize a T20 series ahead of the Asia Cup and World T20. After much deliberation, the BCB has taken the decision of playing only T20 series against Zimbabwe when there was another opinion that Bangladesh also should continue the Test cricket.
“The team management always wants the improvement of the team so they can’t take a bad decision. Since we have some important T20 tournaments and moreover we aren’t much good in this format, the decision to play the T20 series is good,” he pointed out.
“Our confidence level is now much high so I think we have the chance to be successful in this year also whatever the format of the cricket is.”
Riyad showed his T20 credential in the recently concluded BPL when there was whispering that he wasn’t that good in this particular format.
“I don’t know how the others think but I think I am not that bad player in T20 cricket. Moreover I have gained considerable amount of confidence following a successful journey in BPL. I know still I have to work hard. And I am confident of doing well.”
Riyad personally thinks that he could do well in this format as a top order batsman but he left the ball to the court of the team management to take a decision about his batting position.
