Ending all the speculations, Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) is going to arrange only a Twenty20 series against Zimbabwe in the mid-January.
Both BCB and its counterpart Zimbabwe Cricket Board unanimously agreed to play only Twenty20 series considering World T20 in mind when there was talk whether a Test could be included.
The series could be consisted of four matches, all of which would be held in Sylhet. If Sylhet host the series, it would be the first time that Bangladesh men’s team will play in this venue.
Jalal Younus, chairman of BCB media committee, admitted the matter of the Twenty20 series against Zimbabwe, stating that the T20 series is now important consider the upcoming Asia Cup and World Twenty20.
“There is no format of matches barring Twenty20 in the series against Zimbabwe. Along with that, all the matches will be held at Sylhet International Cricket Stadium,” said Jalal Younus.
“We have ICC Under-19 World Cup, Asia Cup ahead. The Bulk of the matches of these two tournaments will be held in Dhaka and Chittagong. And so, we’ve decided to stage the series in Sylhet,” Younus told The Independent.
Insiders said that the board had already prepared fixtures and itinerary of the series. As per the itinerary, the Southern African nation is scheduled to arrive in Dhaka on January 12 after finishing their ongoing series against Afghanistan, which will be ended on January 10.
The first match of the home series is all set to take place on January 14. The second and third matches will be held on January 16 and 18 respectively while the last and fourth match is on January 21.
Earlier, a total of two matches of the Men’s ICC World Twenty20 2014 including Ireland vs Zimbabwe and Netherlands vs Ireland was held at the SICS. Along with that, the bulk of the matches of the Women’s ICC World Twenty20 2014 were also played in the newly-built stadium.
The stadium will also host three matches of the forthcoming ICC Under-19 World Cup including Afghanistan vs Pakistan on January 28, Afghanistan vs Sri Lanka on January 30 and Afghanistan vs Canada on February 1.
Meanwhile, The national team’s training camp for the upcoming Twenty20 home series against Zimbabwe will kick-start today.
All the preliminary squad players have been asked to report to the National Team Strength and conditioning coach Mario Villavarayen at the National Cricket Academy at 9:30am.
Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) meanwhile announced a 27-member preliminary Bangladesh squad for the upcoming Twenty20 series.
After the end of the exciting Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) third edition, all the players got a 19-day-long vacation, which was much needed for them to make a start afresh ahead of the forthcoming tight schedule.
Tigers have to play home series against the Southern African nation and Asia Cup in home yard in between January and February along with the qualifying round of the ICC World Twenty20 2016 in India on the trot.
Getting a three-week break, some of the key players including Mashrafe Bin Mortaza, Mushfiqur Rahim, Tamim Iqbal, Shakib Al Hasan, Mahmudullah Riyad, Soumya Sarkar, Imrul Kayes went abroad.
Most of them came back in Dhaka. They are expected to join the opening day of the training camp in Mirpur. But iconic all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan, who went to USA to meet with his newly born child and wife, will join the camp in the fag end of the week.
The first two-day training will be held on fitness. The training on skill will be begun from January 5.
Bangladesh head coach Chandika Hathurusingha, who is expected to return Dhaka from Australia spending his long vacation within a couple
of days.
Along with Hathurusingha, all the coaching staffs including spin cum assistant coach Nuwan Kalpage, fielding coach Richard Halsal and fast-bowling coach Heath Streak are also supposed to arrive in Dhaka from their respective countries.
