Activists of the Chittagong College unit of the Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) yesterday wrote slogans with their blood in front of the principal’s office as part of their movement to realise their eight-point charter of demands.
The student activists poured blood on the floor near the entrance to college principal Jesmain Akhter’s office around 1pm. The blood was collected from 29 leaders and activists of the BCL’s college unit. Nurul Azim Rony, general secretary of the BCL’s Chittagong city unit, told The Independent: “We have given our blood as we wanted to send the message to the college authorities in support of our demand to ensure security for the general students on the campus.”
“We entered the college campus at 10am and split up into several groups, after which we organised processions on the campus,” said Kaisar Hamid, president of BCL’s Chittagong College unit and vice president of the city unit. The students organised a rally in front of the administration building around 12pm. They announced an indefinite strike on the campus till their demands are met. “We poured our blood in front of the principal’s office around 1pm. We wrote ‘Joy Bangla’ with our blood in front of the office,” said Hamid. “The principal told us she needed some time.” “We withdrew our strike around 2:30pm, following a request by the college authorities. If our demands are not met, we will organise a strike again from Sunday,” added Hamid. On Thursday, the BCL put forward its demands at a press briefing at Chittagong Press Club.
These demands include a permanent police outpost on the campuses of Chittagong College and the nearby Hazi Muhammad Mohsin College; all hostel superintendents, imams and khatibs (who deliver khutba or Friday sermons) to be removed, as they are allegedly patronised by Shibir; all ad hoc staff members of the college to be removed; shops inside the college to be closed; hostels outside the college to be closed, as they are allegedly being used as centres for carrying out sabotage; and the saboteurs to be arrested and expelled from the college.
