SC reopens today after vacation

After a two-week vacation, the Supreme Court (SC) is set to resume its regular activities today.
The SC went on the vacation on December 16, leaving the division benches of the High Court (HC) and the vacation bench of the Appellate Division chamber judge to deal with urgent matters.
The SC is scheduled to deliver its verdict on a war crimes case this week.
On December 8, the Appellate Division of the SC fixed January 6 for delivering its verdict on an appeal filed by Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Motiur Rahman Nizami challenging a war crimes tribunal death penalty for his wartime offences.
International Crimes Tribunal (ICT)-1, on October 29 last year, found 71-year-old Nizami guilty in eight of the 16 war crime charges brought against him, and handed down death penalty on four charges and life imprisonment on four others.
The ICT-1, however, acquitted Nizami of eight other charges as the prosecution failed to prove them.
After delivering the verdict on Nizami, the apex court will gradually dispose of other appeals related to war crimes pending before it.
