BNP plans to hold rally at Suhrawardy Udyan Jan 5

BNP has decided to hold a rally in the city on Tuesday to observe January 5 as ‘Democracy Killing Day’ registering the party’s protest against 10th parliamentary elections held on that day in 2014, reports UNB.
The decision was taken at a joint meeting of the party at its Nayapaltan Central office yesterday.
Briefing reporters after the meeting, BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said, “We recognise January 5, 2014 as a Democracy Killing Day. As part of our movement for the restoration of democracy and marking January 5, we’ve decided to hold a peaceful rally on the day at Suhrawardy Udyan.”
BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia will address the programme, he said.
Besides, Fakhrul said, their all district units will also observe the day by holding discussions in their respective offices on the day.
The BNP leader said they have already sought permission from Dhaka Metropolitan Police and the Suhrawardy Udyan authorities for the programme.
“We hope the government and the authorities concerned will help make the rally a success and allow systematic continuation of democracy,” he said.
Asked what they will do if they are not allowed to hold the programme, Fakhrul said they will declare it if it happens.
BNP had also tried to hold a rally with black flags in front of its Nayapaltan central office on January 5 to observe the day as ‘Democracy Killing Day’ last year unlike Awami League that showcases it as ‘Democracy Saving Day’.
The party, however, could not hold the programme as the government reportedly besieged its chief Khaleda at her Gulshan office on January 3 and locked BNP’s Nayapaltan central office.
Having failed to come out of her office on January 5, Khaleda declared a countrywide transport blockade demanding a fresh election.  The programme continued for 92 days amid widespread violence, including petrol bomb attacks, killing over a hundred people.  Fakhrul said the meeting also worked out programme to observe party founder late President Ziaur Rahman’s 80th birth anniversary on January 19 with due respect.
As part of the programme, party and national flags will be hoisted atop of all offices of the party and its associated bodies, including its Nayapaltan central office in the morning on January 19.
Later, BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia along with party leaders and activists will pay homage to Zia by placing wreaths at his grave around 10am on the day.
They will also offer fateha at the grave seeking salvation of Zia’s departed soul.
Besides, the party will arrange a discussion on the occasion. But, details about the time and venue for the programme will be announced later.
The joint meeting that began at 11:05am was held with Fakhrul in the chair, BNP joint secretaries general, organising secretaries, secretaries, and presidents and secretaries of the party’s associate bodies joined the meeting.
