The draft voter list for 2015 published by the Election Commission (EC) yesterday contains a total 4,368,047 new voters, a 4.5 per cent rise as compared to existing voters. EC sources informed that existing voters in the country numbered 96,226,542. Of the new draft voters, 2,297,895 are male and 2,070,152 are female. However, women voters are 5.21 per cent less as compared to male voters. In 2014, women voters were 10 per cent less than male voters. In 2014, out of a total 4,695,650 voters, 2,629,506 were male and 2,066,144 were female.
Giving this information at a press conference at the EC Media Centre in the capital, Secretary of EC Secretariat, Md Sirajul Islam, said, “Though the inclusion of female voters is a bit less, it is still better than 2014. This change has occurred due to assistance of different government and non-government organisations.” The EC also removed the number of deceased voters, i.e. 735,871. Of those, 485,799 were male and 250,072 were female. Sirajul informed that anyone can raise objection about draft voters till January 17 and objections will be settled by January 22. Registration officers will incorporate information on the basis of objections by January 27 and the final updated voter list will be published on Jan 31.
The draft voter list will be publicly displayed at different offices, district election offices, upazila/thana election office of registration officers, offices of revising authorities and union parishad /municipality/ward office/cantonment board or registration centre and also at important public places.
Asked about Rohingyas, the EC secretary said, “Special measures were taken so that no foreigner can vote. However, anyone can raise question if any such persons are found in the draft list. If the objections are correct, the name will be deleted.” EC started updating the voter list in July 2015 and completed it in November 2015. This is the first time the commission has collected information of all citizens aged 15 to 17 years.
Yesterday, EC made public the list of voters whose age is 18 in 2016. On January 1, 2017, EC will disclose the draft list of voters who will become 18 years old, and the Commission will also publish the draft list of voters, who will become 18 years old on January 1, 2018.
