Varsity teachers work abstention from Jan 11

DU Correspondent

The Federation of Bangladesh University Teachers’ Association has announced a non-stop work abstention programme from January 11 to push for their various demands, including removal of ‘discriminations’ in the 8th Pay Scale, retaining selection grade and time scale. FBUTA General Secretary SM Maksud Kamal made the announcement yesterday after a meeting of the organisation at the DU social science building where representatives of 37 public universities took part.
Teachers of all public universities will attend their classes wearing black badges today and on January 7 they will observe a 3-hour sit in programme at all universities, he added. “The work abstention will continue till the government fulfills our demand and publishes a gadget notification, otherwise the programme will not stop even if the government calls for a discussion” he said. Teachers of public universities are protesting against the eighth national pay scale since May 14, advocating a four-point charter of demands that includes the formation of a commission to initiate an independent pay scale for public university teachers.
Amid protests, the government had formed a cabinet committee headed by Finance Minister AMA Muhith to give recommendations after studying the matter. After a meeting with the FBUTA on December 6, Muhith announced to fulfill their demands but the FBUTA said it did not see any visible progress over the matter in the gadget that was published. Later, they handed over letters to the finance and the education minister and requested to re-publish the gadget meeting their demands.
Meanwhile, Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid yesterday hoped that the ongoing crisis over the demands of the public university teachers centering the 8th Pay Scale will be resolved soon, reports UNB.
“The cabinet committee on eliminating salary discriminations will sit soon over the teachers’ demands,” the minister told UNB after the teachers announced to go on an indefinite strike from 11 January to realise their demands.
Nahid said the committee meeting will be held when the Finance Minister will give time as he is its head.
“We hope the teachers will have a credible solution,” he said adding, “Our ministry is working relentlessly for an immediate solution to the crisis.”
