Asian tight fit..!
As I write from New Zealand with all it's big spacious cars, I think of many years ago when my sister- in- law's husband who landed from New Zealand had asked "Bob, can you fix a cab to take my family to Pune?" he asked long distance. "Sure," I said and rang my neighbor who was in the tourist taxi business. I went later in the night to pick him up from airport and then when I saw his size, that of my sister- in- law and their children hastily rang my wife to come to the airport with her car also. We parked both cars next to each other and then with the skill of an engineer I packed the suitcases in and rejoiced I had a mind which could manage crisis situation when dealing with such: I stared triumphantly at family who looked back puzzled, "Where do we sit?" they asked, then proceeded in repacking the two cars and finally getting in. The tourist taxi that landed this morning was half the size of mine. "Sam!" I whispered to my tourist taxi friend, "How could you?"
"Don't worry Bob," he whispered back, "driver's a sardar, he'll manage!"
We watched first with sceptical smile, then curiosity and finally with grudging admiration as he managed to pack every bag, suitcase and other travel gear including huge pack of toilet paper rolls into every bit of space available inside small car and carrier on top. The family got in, except my New Zealander relative. "Where do I sit?" he grunted staring at daughter who sitting on suitcase, wife holding onto three bags and haversack and little one clinging onto toilet paper pack.
"Not to worry sir," said the sardar as he lifted the heavy bag in front seat, "Sit sir!"
"I am not going to sit with that heavy bag on my lap!" he screamed.
"Not to worry sir," said the sardar as he emptied the seat, let him sit, and then placed bag on his own lap. "How will you drive?" we all shouted.
"Not to worry sir," said the smiling sardar as he started his cab and drove out with arms poking out of either side of suitcase and head peering from the top!
I watched the cab leaving, with my incredulous New Zealander relative, and I realise that in Asia we manage to survive with little.!
