Over the years the Dhaka International Trade Fair (DITF) has become a leading feature of the first day of the New Year in the capital. Like the previous years, the month-long Dhaka International Trade Fair (DITF) 2016 began on Friday with hopes of a strong turnout, especially considering the fact that the political situation in the country has been relatively stable in the last few months. This fair is, by some distance, the biggest fair of its kind in Bangladesh. The first fair was held in 1995 and in the last couple of decades the fair managed to carve out a niche for itself among local and foreign business bodies.
The fair is organised by the Export Promotion Bureau (EPB) and some 22 countries have confirmed their participation for this year’s event. There will be 553 stalls and pavilions at the fair this year, 56 of which have been allotted to foreign countries. Machinery, carpets, cosmetics and beauty products, electronics, jute items, leather and sports goods, sanitary products, toys, ceramics, fabrics, processed food, furniture and handicrafts will be among the products to be showcased at the fair.
DITFs have been contributing to the economic progress of Bangladesh. Trade and commerce increase through the direct contact with foreign buyers as they can see for themselves Bangladeshi products on display. It makes it possible for the participating businessmen of the host country to negotiate with overseas buyers in a friendly ambiance. Unfortunately, DITF has seen a downward trend in the last two years. The fair garnered orders worth Tk 85 crore in 2015 and Tk 80 crore in 2014, down from Tk 157 crore in 2013. This drastic fall in orders was mainly attributed to political disturbances at the time. However as mentioned earlier the organisers expect a complete reverse of the trend this time around. One notable point is that the next year is expected to be the last one at its current venue where the fair is being held since its inception. From 2018 the venue will be shifted permanently to Purbachal area of the city. This decision follows demand for a permanent space for quite some time by various business bodies.
We wish the DITF 2016 all the best and the visitors some happy moments.
