Happy New Year

by Limana Solaiman Mridha
Happy New Year

Every year, we make a set of resolutions to move ahead in life and achieve success. We say goodbye to the old year and embrace the upcoming possibilities and the unknowns of the year ahead of us. This new year, The Weekend Independent caught up with people from all walks of life to learn about their resolutions.

Samira Zuberi Himika, Social entrepreneur, Director at BASIS and board member of Dnet.

I have high aspirations. I do not want to do anything less than the best I can do. As a social entrepreneur, I wish to take my initiatives to global level which aims to enable thousands of lives – be it entrepreneurs, artisans, techies and talented youth and women. By embracing the year 2016 with positivity and transformation, I am looking forward to a grand and brand new year full of possibilities.

Mohammad Shams Ud Duha, Playwright, Fulbright foreign language teaching assistant at Indiana University.

My plans for 2016 mostly centers on the implementation of the knowledge and expertise that I have gathered through my Fulbright journey in the US. I would like to enrich my students with the most up-to-date knowledge on the topics that I teach. One of my core personal goals for 2016 is to make several short films which will have lasting impact on bringing about change in the society. I would also like to continue riding bicycle for commuting in Dhaka city and inspire others to do so. As a citizen of Bangladesh, I earnestly hope that in the New Year, people voice their opinions and do not tolerate corruption and discrimination. I have my utmost faith on our young generation that in 2016, they will make their every effort to make our country a better place to live in and I am sure they will not disappoint us.

Ishraque Husain Anita, Singer

My 2016 resolution is to get out of my comfort zone and push harder to achieve my goals. Planning to work harder and will concentrate in improving myself as a singer. Will be recording new songs and perform onstage with my band of musicians. I have dreamt enough. Now it is time to work extremely hard and make them come true.

Reetu Sattar, Actor/Director at Prachyanat

I feel that I am becoming more matured with every passing year. I am discovering myself more and more. It is always beautiful to know what can you do, how far you can go and what your strengths are. So, I guess I have overcome being confused in life and it is time to understand my limitations and now, my work is to cope with it.
Dr Lina Malek, Consultant Dermatologist at Vibes

I am a positive person and therefore, I am open to new possibilities and would like to push myself to achieve what I want from life. I would love to take time out of my busy schedule and travel and explore new cultures and taste new cuisines. I would like to give something new to the beauty industry in Bangladesh through my work with Vibes, and also improve my abilities as a working professional.

Solaiman Shukhon, Head of business at Aamra Smart Solutions

New Year is not something that I usually look up to from a separate or specific perspective. To me, everyday, every moment I am alive, means a lot. Yet, there is a certain amount of excitement. 2016 for me will a busy year professionally as I am working to launch a new digital solution consumer brand. My dream is to create a whole new category to facilitate digital freedom among Bangladeshi internet users. On a personal note, I am planning to travel to a few interesting tourist destinations at home and abroad with my daughter, Waafa. So for me, it is all about tech and travel. Happy New Year!
