Election Commission Secretary Sirazul Islam yesterday said the turnout of voters was 73.92 percent in Wednesday’s municipal election, reports UNB.
Addressing a press briefing at the EC Secretariat, he said the Commission published the election results of 214 municipalities out of 234 ones.
Awami League’s mayoral candidates were unofficially elected in 168 municipalities, while BNP’s in 19, Jatiya Party’s in one and independent contenders in 26, he said.
Among the AL’s 168 mayor-elect, seven candidates was earlier elected uncontested in their respective municipalities.
Of the remaining 20 municipalities, voting in Madhabdi Narsingdi was cancelled halfway through.
Polling in some election centres in 19 other municipalities were also postponed.
The EC Secretary said there will be fresh voting in those polling stations. Sirazul Islam, however, claimed that the election was held fairly barring some stray incidents.
Replying to a question whether action will be taken based on media reports over election anomalies, he said the Commission took action even on Wednesday following press reports. “We’ll take further action, if necessary, following investigation.”
According to the EC, it postponed polling in 50 polling stations, including 12 polling stations in Madhabdi of Narsingdi, while 10 stations in Chaumuhani of Noakhali, four in Syedpur of Nilphamari, three each in Thakurgaon of Thakurgaon, Jamalpur of Jamalpur and Chandanaish of Chittagong, and two each in Ulipur of Kurigram and Kalkini of Madaripur.
Besides, voting in one polling station was postponed each in Barura of Comilla, Bhaluka of Mymensingh, Kalia of Narail, Kuakata of Patuakhali, Sarishabari of Jamalpur, Nagarkanda of Faridpur, Matlab of Chandpur, Shariatpur of Shariatpur, Barguna and Betagi of Barguna and Jessore.
Meanwhile, a man was killed and 19 others injured in separate incidents of post election violence in Kishoreganj, Netrakona, Sherpur and Pirojpur districts yesterday.
In Kishoreganj, a fierce clash ensued between the supporters of councillor-elect Kajol and defeated councillor candidate Wasim of 2 no ward at Dhulihor village in Hossainpur upazila around 12.30am which left 10 people injured.
