Despite being crossed the status of the age-level cricketer Abu Haider is yet to reach 20. Coming to play the first competitive tournament of Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) in his life, Rony made all stunned by his puzzling pace.
In the just concluded cash-rich T20 tournament, Rony snapped up 21 wickets-the second highest of the tournament after Barisal Bulls’ recruit West Indian Kevon Cooper (22)- from 12 outings with the best figures of 4-19 that he claimed against Rangpur Riders in the Qualifier-1.
Seeing his name in the 27-member preliminary Bangladesh squad for the forthcoming international tournaments, the new pace sensation said that the first step of his dream has been accomplished through getting opportunity in the primary squad. “Last one month I toiled hard and got its reward. I feel well getting calls from the preliminary squad,” said Abu Haider Rony.
“From the initial stage of my career my dream was to play for the national team. I put my first step by getting chance in the preliminary squad. It’ll be completed when I could do my best for my country playing in the best eleven,” Rony told The Independent.
The young pacer said that he feels no hurry to make room in the national fold but he is just practicing hard to improve his skills and technique for better performance.
“I’ve to take up the challenge with growing up. I became successful in BPL. I’m working hard. I’m now honing my skills and techniques in practice. If I make the cut I’ll try my best for the team,” the paceman said.
“But I’ve no hurry. I’ll try to do my own job properly. The rest will be up to selectors. But If I get chance to play for the national team I’ll give my best effort for the team’s success,” he added. Citing the names of Mustafiz, Soumya, Bijoy and Taskin, Abu Haider said that they all are well performing for the national team after playing from Under-19.
“Actually Mustafiz, our 2014 batch mate, made a deserving entry into the national team. Soumya bhai, Bijoy bhai and Taskin are also playing for the national colours. All of them are doing well. They got opportunity playing for performing better show,” he reckoned.
He said that he is focusing on his own performance besides keeping him fit for the games not to go any competition.
“All the pace bowlers are now doing well. As a pacer I’ve to toil hard to cope with the growing competition. Along with that, I’ve to try to make me fit. If I could perform well I could make the cut today and tomorrow,” he thought.
Terming Mashrafe as his national idol, Rony said, “When I used to watch cricket on television I like most Mashrafe bhai. He is my idol. But Australian Michael Johnson and Mohammad Aamir of Pakistan are my idols in world cricket,” Rony signed off.
