Repair city roads immediately

As during the rainy season, doing these works are difficult, and as during this time the woes of the people are aggravated, it is very necessary to repair the unfit roads before the rainy season, that is, now

The main thoroughfares aside, the condition of the capital’s neighbourhood roads, lanes and by-lanes does not give an impression that they are infrastructure of a capital that each year sanctions considerable funds for their proper maintenance. There are many places inside the capital where paved roads have not been constructed yet. These pieces of broken and pot-holed infrastructure become virtually unfit for use during the rainy season when their conditions usually come to limelight through the media.
But once the rainy season is over, people usually do not give much attention to these roads, even though these are not usable for even small vehicles. There are many such roads in the capital on which even the young people---not to mention the old pedestrians---can walk without risking injury to their joints. If one walks through Pirerbagh road connecting Shewarapara with Pirerbagh, he would realise the truth of it.
Added to this unfit condition, is the endless digging of these vital places of road communication. By simple but important coordination between certain departments including WASA and the two city corporations, the problem of digging of roads can be greatly minimised for the city dwellers, but the broken and potholed roads, lanes and by-lanes of the capital need urgent repair or reconstruction. As during the rainy season, doing these works are difficult, and as during this time the woes of the people are aggravated, it is very necessary to repair the unfit roads before the rainy season, that is, now.
Moreover, these roads have to be well constructed or repaired so that they can be used for a longer period of time. It is not unusual to see that a newly constructed road just crumbling down after two or three months in our country. The theft of allocated government fund in these public works is so pervasive. And as a country of poor resources Bangladesh hardly can afford to spend for the same road every year.
According to an estimate, Dhaka City Corporation (DCC) spent last year an amount of 220 crore taka for repairing only about 50 kilometres of roads, sidewalks and dividers for the capital. The amount is too big for the country to spend every year. For earning the confidence of city dwellers, the two Dhaka city corporations must give priority to these public service works. In all cases the satisfaction of the city dwellers should be the ultimate ideal of the two city corporations.
