Fishermen, wholesale dealers as well as consumers are happy as a huge amount of hilsa is being netted in recent days in the district.
As a result, fishermen are busy day night to catch hilsa in the Meghna River. At the same time workers in processing factory, cold storage shops, ice suppliers are also spending busy time.
Scores of fishermen are returning with catch at terminals where fish traders have crowded with containers for shipment to Dhaka and Barisal markets. With the reappearance of Hilsa, fishermen residing along the river in Noakhali and Hatiya have become busy in fishing and marketing the catches.
The price is about fifty per cent less compared to the price earlier.
In August during the full season, a big size hilsa was sold at Tk 1,200 to Tk 1,500 and a maund at Tk 48,000. Now the price is only Tk 20,000 per maund.
A wholesaler Mobarak Ullah said, ‘I invested around Tk 1,20,000 for each trip against rent of trawler, oil and food of fishermen. After catching hilsa, the fishermen got 40 percent of the profits and the rest goes to Mahajan. Nearly 24 terminals are crowded for hilsa catches. Generally Bengali month of Jastha and Asar is the period of catching hilsa. But now during the winter season fishermen are surprised and happy to catch large amount of hilsa.
