The meteoric upsurge in 2015 made Bangladesh forced to be reckoned with in the world cricket. But the question that came to the fore how the side that were in the glut of defeats in 2014, made a surprising turnaround. From the players, backroom staffs to the cricket experts gave the credit to skipper Mashrafe Bin Mortaza to bring up dynamic changes to the side. The pacer’s infectious energy on the field and composure off it was believed to be worked wonders for his team. At 31 and with almost 14 years of international cricket behind him, Mortaza’s success as leader however has been no fluke. Bangladesh are always blessed with talented young cricketers but still the victories were a few and far between. It seemed something were missing but when went missing, nobody could identify clearly until the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) president Nazmul Hassan Papon came up with split captaincy formula.
A completely corporate man Papon also made some changes to the team which also worked as wonder but decision to make Mashrafe captain in the limited over cricket is now considered as masterstroke.
Under his leadership, Bangladesh firstly came out from the perpetual failure having whitewashed Zimbabwe in five-match ODI series at the end of the 2014. The dominating series victory however was considered to the precursor of a blockbuster 2015.
“Decision to make Mashrafe Bin Mortaza worked as wonder. To me it’s a masterstroke,” said renowned cricket commentator Athar Ali Khan.
“The BCB president is an avid cricket lover and always wants to do something for the betterment of the cricket. He identified the problems of the team cannily and the result is obvious.”
Bangladesh created history almost every month in 2015, especially in one-day internationals. First, a historical World Cup quarter-final appearance, followed by maiden series wins over Pakistan and India and then South Africa. They rounded off the year with yet another series whitewash over Zimbabwe, a team against whom the run of success had begun. In the process, they sealed the 2017 Champions Trophy berth after climbing to seventh position in ICC ODI rankings and thereby ICC also acknowledged Bangladesh’s meteoric upsurge.
The cricket world noticed the progress made by this young Bangladesh team in the ICC World Cup in March in 2015 at Down Under.
“His mantra was to play fearless cricket. He said us, just keep faith on your ability and go after the bowlers,” said Soumya Sarkar who announced his arrival during the World Cup.
“He is the one who made the team a fearless unit,” said former Bangladesh fielding coach Salahuddin who also worked with Mashrafe as coach in Comilla Victorians.
Athar on the other hand said, Mashrafe’s good communication skill on and off the field with the players worked well.
“You know how jolly he is. He knows how to realise the best of the players. He instilled the belief and nursed the rookie players well.”
According to Athar, “2015 has been the Year of the Tiger,” considering their outstanding success.
The arrival of quality young fast bowlers acted as wonder. Rubel Hossain and Taskin Ahmed can both bowl at 140 kph clicks and can make batsmen jump and fend. Mustafizur Rahman’s off-cutter still remains a mystery.
“We also got some quality bowlers like Mustafizur, Taskin. They have the ability to demolish any batting line up of the world cricket,” Athar said.
But what Athar wants to see, the rise of Bangladesh in the Test cricket.
“We are now a fine unit in ODI cricket and now we have to make sure that similar kind of performance we would transfer into the longer version cricket. I believe this Bangladesh could do that,” he added.
The backroom staffs also played their part well. Chandika Hathurusingha proved him a shrewd technician.
He was aided by Heath Streak who also knows how to inspire the players.

Finally, it is about team unity that contributed in making them an impeccable team.
