Nearly 8 lakh primary- and secondary-level students of Barisal district, including cities, will get free books on January 1, 2016. The National Curriculum Textbook Board (NCTB) has already supplied these books to schools, where the District Primary and Secondary Education Office has distributed them to schools and madrasas and the vocational institute authority at the city and village levels. Sources from Barisal office of the Deputy Director Primary and Secondary Education said that there was demand for 5,696,184 copies in 10 upazilas, six municipalities, and one city of Barisal district. Of these, the district directorate office had received 97 per cent secondary and madrasa level books and 79 per cent primary level books till December 24. The remaining books were on the way and would be distributed at school level till December 28. Sources said the book distribution ceremony would be held at the century-old Sister’s Day Primary School Auditorium on January 1 morning and at the Government Sadar Girls’ and Government Zilla School on January 1 and 2, respectively. They said the department has been closely monitoring the process of distribution right from the beginning and almost all students would get the books within the stipulated time. On his visit to different schools in the city, this correspondent found that school authorities had already distributed books to class teachers for speedy distribution among students at the appointed time.
