Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) personnel will be deployed in 229 municipalities from today to maintain a peaceful environment during the upcoming civic poll scheduled to be held on December 30. The BGB will be in the municipalities for four days to prevent any sort of untoward incidents in the polling centres. There will be no BGB deployment in Muladi, Mehendiganj, Patharghata, Ramgati, Sandwip and Hatiya municipalities. The Election Commission (EC) yesterday sent a letter to the home ministry about the deployment of the BGB during the elections. The letter said two platoons of BGB members will be deployed in those municipalities where the number of voters will be over one lakh. One platoon of BGB is equal to more than 33 members.
If the number of voters is below 10,000, but above 50,000, in a municipality, then an extra platoon will be deployed there. Those municipalities where the number of voters is below 50,000, but above 10,000, will have one more additional platoon. Meanwhile, pre-poll violence continued in different municipality areas during election campaigns.On December 30, the EC will hold elections to 234 municipalities. Singair municipality poll under Manikganj will be held on January 7. The elections will be held in 3,558 polling centres. As per the election rule, the polling campaign will end today midnight, and any sort of campaign after this deadline will be considered a punishable offence. Meanwhile, the commission withdrew three officers-in-charge (OCs) of different police stations yesterday for violating the election code of conduct. The OCs are from Hatya of Noakhali, Jagannathpur of Sunamganj and Ishwarganj of Mymensingh, said EC deputy secretary Shamsul Alam. Besides, the commission has cautioned the OC of Phulpur Police Station of Mymensingh for violating the electoral code of conduct.
