The Detective Branch (DB) of police busted a ‘den’ of the banned militant Islamist outfit Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen at Ishak Bhaban of Amanbazar area in Chittagong’s Hathazari police station area yesterday. They raided the den on the basis of the information disclosed by three JMB activists who were arrested on Saturday. The arrestees were identified as Naimur Rahman alias Nayan (25) of Kurigram, Faisal Mahmud (26) of Senbag in Noakhali, and Shawkat Rasel (26) of Moheshkhali in Cox’s Bazar. All of them claimed to be master's or graduation students of Chittagong University’s physics department, said sources in the DB. An MK-11 sniper rifle used by US Navy SEAL units, 250 rounds of bullets, 10 detonators, around five kg of explosive gel, two magazines, 12 military uniforms, a pair of army major badges, jihadi books, and lots of equipment used for making crude bombs were seized from the den.
“Shawkat told us about the den of Fardin, the Chittagong unit military commander of the JMB. He told us that Fardin had left Chittagong a few days ago. We conducted the drive from around 12:30am to 6am at Ishak Bhaban behind Joynab Colony in Aman Bazar area,” said Babul Akter, additional deputy police commissioner of the DB.
“We didn't find anyone in the house. We broke the lock and entered the house. We found the arms, ammunition and army suits. Fardin was using the house as a den of the militant outfit,” he added. Following the recovery of weapons, a press briefing was arranged at Chittagong Metropolitan Police (CMP) headquarters around 11am yesterday. In the briefing, CMP commissioner Abdul Jalil Mandal said the explosives are enough to destroy two to four buildings.
“Common people won’t be able to use the semi-automatic sniper rifle. It can hit from 1,500 yards and its bullet is bound to kill the target,” he also said. “We had information that Fardin was planning to carry out a suicide attack. But, our detectives foiled his plan,” he added. In the press briefing, additional police commissioner (administration and finance) AKM Shahidur Rahman, additional police commissioner (crime and operation) Devdas Bhattacharya, and Babul Akter were present. No case had been filed till last reports came in at 5.30pm yesterday, but police said the process of filing a case was on.
