Awami League Advisory Council member Suranjit Sengupta, MP, yesterday said national unity could not be forged going beyond the constitution of 1972, reports UNB. “Unity can never be reached between the democratic forces and the ultra communal forces. Unity with BNP can only be forged if it honours the constitution of 1972, the War of Liberation, Bangabandhu and independence,” he said. Suranjit Sengupta, also chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Ministry, said this while speaking as the chief guest at a discussion in the city.
Bangabandhu Sangskritik Jote (BSJ) organised the discussion on “Begum Khaleda Zia’s remarks against the state, the pourasabha (municipal) polls and the politics of BNP” at the Maitree auditorium of Mukti Bhaban at Purana Paltan with its adviser Mobarak Ali Shikdar in the chair.
Prof Dr Akhteruzzaman, a teacher of History Department of Dhaka University, and Advocate Rana Dasgupta, general secretary of Bangladesh Hindu-Bouddha-Christian Oikya Parishad, were the discussants, among others.
Suranjit Sengupta, also a senior parliamentarian of the ruling Awami League, said BNP chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia would have to take decision whether she would choose the path of democracy or the side of militancy.
“The Middle-East brand of politics will not function in Bangladesh as a rich culture is involved in the country’s politics. People irrespective of their religious faiths of the country together established the right of lingua-franca, likewise they secured independence of Bangladesh waging an armed struggle,” he said.
Pointing at BNP chairperson, Sunranjit Sengupta said, “It can’t be taken into acceptance that you would come up with adverse remarks on nationally and internationally resolved figure of the martyrs of the great War of Liberation and do politics in the country. Such remarks meant nothing but making the great War of Liberation controversial.”
