Cyber crimes increasing alarmingly in the country: Speakers

RAJSHAHI: Experts and researchers at a seminar observed that cyber crimes are increasing alarmingly in the country with rapid rise of internet users at both individual and institutional levels and they unequivocally called for adequate preventive measures to avert any fearful consequence. They said emphasis should be given on public awareness so that the internet uses remain concentrated within welfare of the country and its people as well.
The observation came in a daylong seminar titled “Cyber Crime, Security and Uses of Digital Signature” held at central auditorium of Rajshahi University of Engineering and Technology (RUET) yesterday, reports BSS.
Computer Science and Engineering Department of RUET and Information and Communication Technology (ICT) division of Posts, Telecommunications and Information Technology Ministry jointly organised the seminar.
RUET Vice-chancellor Prof Rafiqul Alam Beg and Controller of ICT Division Abu Monsur Sharif Uddin addressed the seminar as chief and special guests respectively with Prof Shahid Uz Zaman, in-charge of central computer centre of RUET, in the chair.
Prof Beg mentioned that Bangladesh has achieved some progress in creating a cyber-friendly atmosphere by adopting a number of initiatives.  “We have the ICT Act 2006 along with its subsequent amendments. There should be a department or authoritative body that will have regulatory overseeing power which can safeguard personal and sensitive data”, he said.
Abu Monsur Sharif Uddin told the audience that the ICT Division has introduced a number of projects in which awareness building activities are being undertaken for the prevention of cyber crimes. The Division has promulgated two guidelines which are helpful for cyber crime control.
Dean of Computer Science and Engineering Faculty Prof Rafiqul Islam Sheikh, Registrar-in-Charge Prof Mosharraf Hossain and Director of Students Welfare Prof Dr NHM Kamruzzaman also spoke.
In the technical session, Associate Prof Dr Zulfikar Ahmed from Department of Law of Rajshahi University and PKI Specialist Masudur Rahman presented two keynote papers on ‘ICT Act 2006: Crimes and Punishment’ and ‘Digital Signature and PKI Model in Bangladesh’ respectively.
Zulfikar Ahmed says the presence of cyber crimes relies heavily on the internet and online activity, and as a result, regulations and oversight of this type of activity has been expressed in the spectrum of Cyber Law.
Cyber Law is a fairly expensive legal field that consists of a variety of avenues and jurisdictions, including the ethical and moral use of the Internet for lawful and legal purposes.
During presentation of his paper, Masudur Rahman says common types of cyber crime include online bank information theft, identity theft, online predatory crimes and unauthorized computer access. More serious crimes like cyber terrorism are also of significant concern. More than 300 scientists, researchers, students, teachers and others concerned attended the seminar sharing views and opinions on how to check the crimes collectively.
