77 held, drugs seized in Ctg
Police in separate drives arrested at least 77 people, including warranted accused from different parts of Chittagong district Friday night. Kazi Abdul Awal, additional superintendent of police (Special Branch) of Chittagong district, said police detained 77 people including warranted accused from different upazilas of the district for their alleged involvement in sabotage acts and vandalism. The police also seized 150-gram marijuana during the drives. Among the arrestees, 71 were arrested following the warrants and six were accused in regular cases, the police official said.
Two killed in road mishap
Two youths were killed in a road accident in Mirerbazar area of Gazipur Friday night.
The deceased were identified as motorcycle rider Swapan Mohan, 30, and co-rider Samar Halder, 41. Police sources said the accident occurred when a truck hit their motorcycle from the opposite direction in the area, leaving the two dead on the spot. Police recovered the bodies and sent those to Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmed Medical College Hospital morgue. A case was filed in this connection.
Man detained with shutter-gun
Police detained an alleged firearms trader with a shutter-gun and two rounds of bullets from Char Kalidaskhali village under Bagha Upazila of Rajshahi on Friday, police said.
The arrested was identified as Mijanur Rahman, 34, of Chilmari village under Dowlatpur Upazila of Kustia district.
On a tip-off, a police team conducted a drive in the remote area and arrested Mijanur and seized a shutter-gun and two rounds of bullets after searching his body.
Quoting the confessional statement the sources said the arrested was a professional firearms businessman.
Meanwhile, in another anti-crime operation, a RAB team arrested five drug-traders with 200 grams of heroin, taka 50,000 in cash, a motorbike and four mobile phone sets from Sultanganj Bazar area under Godagari Upazila of the district Friday night. The arrested are: Abdul Latif, 38, Abdul Mannan, 35, Tariqul Islam, 37, and Mazdar Ali, 52.
4 injured in gas cylinder blast
Four persons were injured in a gas cylinder explosion while they were filling gas into balloons in Rajshahi Cadet College yesterday morning. The injured were identified as Head Plumber Waheduzzaman, 30, and Assistant Masson Monjur Rahman, 28, and two outsiders Rubel, 45, son of Hossain Ali of Seroil area and Selim, 40, son of Molbul Hossain, of Chhotobangram area in Rajshahi city. They are now undergoing treatment in burn unit of Rajshahi Medical College Hospital. Nibaran Chandra Barman, officer-in-charge of Charghat Police Station, said necessary preparations are going on in RCC ahead of its annual sports competition scheduled to be held on Monday. As part of the preparations, the workers were filling gas into balloons from cylinder.
