A Dhaka court yesterday put United Hospital employee (brother) Saiful Islam on a one-day remand in a case filed in connection with the sexual harassment of a female patient, reports UNB. Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate M Asaduzzaman Nur passed the order rejecting his bail petition. Earlier in the day, sub-inspector of Gulshan Police Station M Mahidul Islam produced him before the court seeking a five-day remand for interrogation. Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) members on Thursday night arrested Saiful from the Airport Railway Station.
According to the report of vernacular daily Jugantar and private TV channel Ekattor Television, the female patient was unconscious at the intensive care unit (ICU) of the hospital after an operation and when she regained her senses she found brother Saiful Islam abusing her sexually on November 30 last. The patients husband alleged that he was allowed to meet his wife after 16 hours of the incident. The hospital authorities sacked Saiful but did not hand him over to police despite her husbands request, said the reports.
On December 3, the High Court directed the Gulshan Police Station to arrest Saiful Islam and produce him before the court on December 7. After the HC directive, Gulshan Police Station filed a case against Saiful under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act on that day. Besides, the HC had also issued a rule asking the authorities concerned to explain why punitive action should not be taken against the United Hospital Authorities and the staff.
