With only two days of electioneering left, mayoral candidates backed by the Awami League and the BNP are busy in making the most of the shrinking campaign time, ahead of the December 30 municipality polls. Stalwarts of both parties have already engaged in the elections campaign, along with their party-backed candidates, across the country. Earlier, the Election Commission (EC) had announced the election schedule for 234 municipalities, where political parties are getting a chance to participate directly for the first time.
BNP stalwarts, including its acting secretary-general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, standing committee members Hannan Shah, Lt-Gen. (retd) Mahbubur Rahman, and Goyeshwar Chandra Roy, have already joined the election campaign to support BNP-backed candidates across the country. Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, along with other central leaders, started electioneering from Syedpur, Nilphamary and Panchagarh districts on Thursday, and, yesterday, he chugged along the campaign trail in Thakurgaon, Dinajpur, Gaibandha, Bogra, Sherpur and Sirajganj. Meanwhile, the ruling AL formed seven teams for seven divisions, comprising central leaders and organising secretaries. These teams have already started campaigning in favour of party-backed candidates from Monday.
As the local government elections are going to be held under the party banners for the first time, the ruling AL wants to sweep to victory at ‘any cost’, while BNP wants a free, fair and credible election. BNP insiders said if the elections are held in a free, fair and credible manner, its candidates will secure victory in most of the municipalities, while AL insiders said their party-nominated candidates will do better than ever before, as the people of the country will not vote for the BNP’s candidates, as the party’s members killed people by hurling petrol bombs in the name of waging a political movement. Our local correspondent reports that AL-backed candidates are trying to attract voters by projecting the incumbent government’s various development activities, and the violent acts of the BNP-Jamaat combine, while BNP-backed candidates urged the voters to vote for honest and competent people.
On the other hand, BNP candidates think that no matter which government is in power, as it is the local government elections, people should vote for the competent candidates. Md Ramjan Ali, the AL-backed mayoral candidate for Manikganj Pourasabha, has been saying in his campaign that people should vote for him, to help implement the Sheikh Hasina government’s Vision 2021, reports our Manikganj correspondent.
