A court here on Wednesday convicted a man and sentenced him to two years’ imprisonment in a case filed for dowry in 2014, reports UNB.
The convict was identified as Abdullah Munsi, son of Golam Munsi, a resident of Joralia village in Sadar upazila of Narail district.
The court also fined him Tk 2,000, in default, to serve one month’s imprisonment more.
According to the prosecution, Abdullah married Piari Pervin, daughter of Sayed Ali of Dariaghata
village in Sadar upazila of Narail district, in 1999.
Abdullah had been demanding Tk one lakh as dowry from his in-laws and used to torture his wife Piari over the issue since their marriage.
As Piari refused to give dowry, Abdullah sent her to her father’s house.
Later, on August 26, 2014, Piari filed a case with the Judicial Magistrate’s Court, Jessore under the Dowry Prohibition Act 1980.
After examining all documents and witnesses, Judge of Jessore Senior Judicial Magistrate’ Court Mohammad Abu Ibrahim handed down the verdict.
